Snow Way Out

08-01-2010
It’s official – Ireland is in the depths of a crisis, brough to its knees by none other than some bad weather. It is shocking to see just how poorly equipped we are to deal with bad weather that has been forecast for some time.

5cm of snow and temperatures ‘plunging’ to -8 has seen the capital city come to a virtual standstill! Teachers around the country are off for the foreseeable future as schools have closes, civil servants sent home early to make sure they can get home safe, Dublin bus services shut down, the airport closed and the council running for the hills as they come under some severe scrutiny of their handling of the entire situation as salt, grit and even water supplies run at critical levels. Not to mention the uproar at the fact that the minister for transport is still holidaying abroad while the transport network in the country falls to pieces.

We are acting like a bunch of headless chickens. That’s not to say I am not as bad as everyone else. I have bitched and moaned about the cold as much as the next person (if not more – I may have been born to live in luxury as previously mentioned, this luxury should also be within a climate of 20 degrees and above. If only)

What is shocking is that if you take a look at somewhere like Canada, where temperatures dip to a rather chilly -30 and sometimes lower, the snow is usually measured in feet (none of this CM malarkey over there) and yet they function just fine, they are prepared for it, they endure and they power through.

When I heard some of the tales from a friend of my who is spending a year over on that side of the pond, I felt a bit ashamed of my recent moaning, extremely embarrassed about our inability to function in the big freeze and more importantly down right pissed off at the lack of preparation for this predicted cold spell on the governments behalf.

Enjoy your sun, sea sand and whatever else Mr Dempsey. You can bet your holiday will come to an abrupt and harsh end once you finally do set foot back on Irish soil as there are a lot of peeved people waiting here for you. Myself included.
