It's a mad world
19-01-2010I read in the paper this morning, among the many many articles on the poor folks of Haiti that there will be a ‘Hope for Haiti’ event held in New York this Friday.
Hope for Haiti? What is this I hear you ask? Ok you have twisted my arm, I will fill you in all the glory (yes glory) details. It would seem that George Clooney among others, has decided that he will be the next Geldof and in a valiant effort to raise funds for the distraught people of Haiti he is hosting a charity concert of sorts, a benefit if you will. Good old Bono himself has even written a song for it (which will be available for download on iTunes from nest week for all you U2 fans).
While I can take all this with a pinch of salt it was the next line of this article that really stood out and caught my attention. The aim of this charity benefit is to ’show the people of Haiti that the whole world is paying attention’.
Are you taking the mick?!
Sure this makes perfect sense. These people who have lost friends, family, homes, belongings, lively hoods and the will to live in some cases are going to what exactly? Huddle round the TV and watch these glory hunting celebs lord it up on stage to raise money for them. Of course they are!
You want to show Haiti that you care people of tinsel town? Then dig deep and donate without the desire or the push for good PR coverage. Sandra Bullock has donated 1 million from her own purse, quietly without the need for an audience, even lady gaga has donated the sales of her New York concert (every single cent of it – meaning she forks out for the venue, her staff wages and god knows what else since the money from ticket sales is now being directed elsewhere – and lets face it, she could do with the cash herself – just look at her wardrobe)
This apparent show of good citizenship is really irritating. You think the people of Haiti want a song or a charity benefit, they want your cash without the fuss, they want food and shelter.
Now excuse me while I go and donate a little bit of my cash online to help in whatever way I can. It might not be thousands, it is not even hundreds, but at least I do not need to host a concert or benefit to show the world just how good a person I am with my teeny donation.
