Stats of crap

On my way home from my dance class last night I came across one of the most blatent examples of false advertising that I have ever seen as i stood waiting on my train home. And the culprit? Our very own Iarnród Éireann.

The advertising? The so called ‘excellent’ service that Ireland’s Rail Network provides to public transport users.

Smack bang in the middle of Tara Station an adshell stating that during January 87% of Irish trains arrived as scheduled during this period – as scheduled meaning no later than 5 minutes after they were due. For starters, thats statement is all wrong, trains arriving as scheduled means they arrive at the time stated on the timetable. This lark about no later than 5 minutes is a joke. If a train pulls into my station 5 minutes after it was meant to, that train is late. End of. It is not on schedule.

Next of all, as a commuter, I can tell you, from standing freezing my tootsie off on a cold January day waiting for a train on numerous occasions, there is not a hope in hell (even if you do use this law of ‘no later than 5 minutes’) that 87% of trains arrived as scheduled.

The next piece of information was almost as bad as the first. Over 97% of ALL trains ran as timetabled during the month. Obviously the other 3% were just MY trains that were cancelled during the big freeze than threw the whole city into turmoil.

If the Irish Rail Network wasnt such a joke I might be more angry at these ‘facts’ however I just find it amusing that the only people Iarnród Éireann are fooling, are themselves.

Give yourselves a hearty pat on the back, only half of the Irish commuters were late for work this morning due to unexplained stoppages between stations, only 4 out of 5 travellers felt slightly nauseous due to the over packing of train cars thanks to the lack trains that are on during rush hour, only 80% felt the cold nip of hypothermia as they stood in the cold on the platform waiting for the ghost train and only 5% of your customers read those Iarnród Éireann service ads as everyone else knows they are a load of crap.

See, I can make up statistics too <img src=' />

Ah give them a break. 90% of statistics are made up anyway, 4 out of 5 people know that
