Guilty Pleasures
23-03-2010The New Moon DVD was finally released yesterday to much abated breath from Twi Hard Fans. My sister rushed out (I kid you not, you could practically see the smoke from under her feet as she ran to buy her copy) first thing yesterday morning to make sure she got the DVD. The very same girl has said every five minutes for the past month or so 'guess what happens on the 22.03.2010?! - New Moon is out, New Moon is out!' And to answer your question, yes it does get annoying after the first million times
The point is she makes no bones about the fact that she ADORES Twilight, she doesn't shrink away from the fact, she doesn't buy the DVD when none of her friends are about, she feels no shame about her Twi Hard love.
I do not like the movies but I do love the books. It's a guilty pleasure of mine. Not something I frequently admit, hence why it is referred to a guilty pleasure.
All this got me to thinking about those hobbies / loves of mine that I could refer to as 'guilty pleasures'. Those things I love despite the embarrassing stigma attached to them. There are quite a few I can tell you. (Insert pun here about the other half being one of them
I love chick lit. Really. Marian Keyes, I worship the woman. Cecilia Ahern, I adore her writing. Chick lit is easy reading. Nothing beats curling up on the sofa and getting lost in a world that will always have a happy ending. Hell I even want to write my own chick lit some day.
Cheesy pop music is something I hide in secret playlists on my iPod. Hanson and their cheese tastic mmm bop, Kylie, Steps and The Backstreet Boys, that tune 'Sexy Eyes' all these are guaranteed to get me on the dance floor on a night out. I can't help it. I know most pop music is so sweet it would make you sick, and still I listen. I blame top of the pops.
On the subject of music I shamefully adore most things country. Drives the other half mad. I grew up in a household that subjected me to every genre of music and the country stuck. Mock as you may but I reckon there is a secret country fan in everyone somewhere. Most guys like Johnny Cash - that man is as country as you can get!
Doctor Who. I am not a geek and I am not sure how this one happened. Living with someone who has the box sets means I was bound to get bored enough to watch them one day. And I did. I find the stories enthralling and the adventures exciting. I even dreamt last night that I travelled with the doctor. And as for David Tennant, the man is delectable. Maybe I should have left out the dream part there.
Penguins and tea. Sounds normal enough, nothing too shameful or embarrassing there. That is until I explain that the best way to eat penguins is to nibble a corner of two diagonal corners, suck the tea up through and quickly eat the rest of it. Trust me, its heaven.
Grease Two. Most people don't even know there was a follow up to the smash hit that was Grease. I can bet ten quid 99% of the male population certainly didn't. The songs and dance numbers are so cheesy, it's impossible not to love! Who can forget the catchy and 'oh-so-very-wrong' tune that was Reproduction or Michelle Pfeiffer clad in leather belting out 'Cool Rider' (which is also on my iPod it has to be said). I remember being maybe 12 or 13 and really rooting for the geek to score the coolest girl in school. I know every line to every song and most of the dance moves as well. I sincerely hope I am not the only one as that would be less of a guilty pleasure and most of a death by embarrassment situation.
Dawsons Creek. Remember that? The show were teenage kids spoke like college professors and had more drama in one summer than most people have in their lives. I was a HUGE Pacey fan. The word 'was' is a bit incorrect there. I still am. Joshua Jackson was probably my biggest teenage crush, its hard to shake a love like that.
Strictly Come Dancing. Maybe it's the sequins, maybe its the dance moves, maybe it's even Brucie himself who knows, but for some reason I love the show! I wish they wouldn't put it on at the same time as the X Factor, it results in too much channel flicking for a Saturday night. I have often said I would love to become famous - only so I could get a place on Strictly. Maybe that chick lit novel will help
At least one thing hasn't made it to the list - Twilight Movies. A small consolation but I gotta take what I can get.
