Commuter Hassle

07-04-2010
I have just got off the phone with Iarnród Éireann and have come to the conclusion that they are completely and utterly incompetent. Seriously.

I have one of those annual commuter tickets; you know the piece of plastic with the magnetic strip on the back. It entitles me to free dart and short hop bus journeys. I got it in February. By March it was broke. The magnetic strip had gone on the back of it. Turns out it is a fairly common problem with the card. Every morning there are people climbing over the gates as their card has kicked the bucket again.

Last week I called the lovely people of Iarnród Éireann who politely told me, I would have to pop into Connolly Station to get a replacement ticket.

Fair do's.

I 'popped in' to Connolly Station on over the Bank Holiday but was told that ticket issuing over the bank holiday was not possible.
Again, fair do's.

So I called them today to find out the opening hours presuming it would be something like Monday - Saturday 8am - 7pm, you know, sensible hours for annual ticket issuing considering the majority of people who purchase them are office workers.

It turns out they open 8.30am - 5pm, Monday - Friday. Office hours.

Now is it just me or does that strike you are completely and utterly ridiculous.
The ONLY place to get your annual commuter ticket replaced only opens office hours. The name is a bloody giveaway! Commuter ticket! Chances are a commuter is going to be working Monday - Friday, in somewhat similar (if not longer) hours.

I calmly (yes believe it or not) explained my situation to the gentleman on the phone and his response, 'but eh, eh, we only open those hours'.

So what am I meant to do, either take time out of my working day every month when the god damn thing breaks (and then have to work overtime to make it up or rapidly lose my holidays fixing my commuter ticket) or hold everyone up in the morning as I try to get the attention of the guy sleeping in the dart office by frantically waving my arms and flashing my ticket to get him to open the gate for me. I am too small to jump the gate; I do not have the luxury of some of my fellow commuters.

At least now I have an email address to send my issue to. I am a woman on a mission now.
