The height of nonsense
12-04-2010I read an interesting article today in the Metro Herald that informed its morning readers, that the key to success is height. If you are a woman that is. Seriously. As a vertically challenged woman myself, all 5ft 1 1/2 of me (the half matters my friends) was immediately drawn to the piece.
According to recent research female staff over 5ft 8in tall have consistently more success in the work place than the shorter counterparts. The study claims that women over the 5ft 8in mark are twice as likely to earn more than 30,000 a year and pocket an average of 5,000 more annually. It goes on to say that 20% of women who are paid 30,000stg and above (apologies for the sterling measurements here folks) were in the tall category compared with 10% of those who were under 5ft 8in.
The study found that 20 per cent of tall women credit their stature as giving them empowerment and authority.
What about me? I am well under that bench mark! Does that mean I have no empowerment and authority? I can hear the sniggers of my friends as they read this, sniggers for me even trying to imply that statement is true.
I am empowered. I can be authority figure without being a bitch. This has nothing to do with my height. It has to do with my perception of myself. It is about having faith in the fact that I can deal with whatever life throws at me.
I have every ambition to be successful in both my personal life and my career and this has nothing to do with how I measure up physically. If you aim low the highest you will ever reach is your aim. Aim for the stars, you might not reach them but you will get a hell of a lot further than those who don't. Having self believe and self confidence, to me personally, is worth so much more than an extra few inches on my height tally. No one can determine how successful you are, or will be, bar one person, yourself.
So my fellow shorties, always remember to walk tall, and if you ever feel you need those extra inches to give you a bit more self confidence, then that's why god invented 4 inch killer heels.
