Wee Red
27-05-2010The little sister got the keys to her house yesterday. By little I mean younger as she stands a whole half inch taller than me (every little counts in our family of short asses). She is moving in with her other half after a few years and it seems so grown up! Even though she is just over two years younger than me, I am very protective of her and often forget / over see the fact that she is a mature young woman now and doesn’t really need a shorter albeit slighter older sister looking out for her but I can't help it.
It started as she always got a lot of stick in school as she was (and still is) a red head. A lot of kids tried to rattle her by calling her ginger, ginge, fire ball, carrot top; you know all the usual nice things that kids have to say at school. It never bothered her but it always really got to me. You see she was able to handle it better than most, or more importantly never took the 'meant to sting' insults as insults. As she was born pretty much with her ginger locks my parents did something a bit strange, radical even. They nicknamed her red.
We all had pet names growing up (and no, before you ask I won't reveal mine) and my dad took to calling my sister, wee red, which got shortened over the years to just red. As a result, she seen it as the norm, it was her special name and she got it because of her hair colour, so when other kids tried to taunt her because of that very reason, it was like water of a ducks back to her. Now the kids have come and gone and we have all grown up and left school yet the name has stuck. She is still red, on all our mobile phones that is how she is listed, her pet names is used more than her Christian name in the house, and if you ask her how she feels about it? Well she loves it; it’s her pet name, a term of endearment and affection. The bullies were fighting a losing battle.
So now wee red is moving out and the home house won't be the same without her. I may not live there anymore but I know I will feel the loss of that little extra something at home just as much as my folks will.
