Happiness is the arrivals lounge
12-08-2010I had to pick up some holiday goers from the airport yesterday and as I was waiting at the arrivals it struck me, if you ever feel like the world is a bitter place, then you should spend a hour here. Just watching. As their flight was delayed I had a bit of time on my hands and I cursed myself silently for having forgotten my book. So having nothing else to do, I grabbed a coffee, a comfortable seat and I waited.
It was then I started to notice the different types of travelers, there are those returning from a short holiday, anything from a few days to a few weeks, obvious by their luggage, attire and general demeanor. Then there are those very obviously traveling for business, the smaller luggage, usually with wheels and small enough for carry on. The there are those returning home after a long period of time. Friends and family gathered anxiously, peering up in expectation every time the gates swing open. It was these I found most heart warming, obviously.
The 'welcome home's' the hugs, the frantic waving when they first catch sight of each other. It would make even the most cold hearted feel a little flutter.
I thought about the many stories that each one must have, tales from traveling, updates from home, months and months of catching up. I could have sat there much longer, just to take it all in. But it was my turn to stand up and wave as people came through the gates, not because I haven't seen them in a long time, after all it was only a week since I waved them off, but more because in the throngs of all those welcomes and hugs, I was afraid they might not see little old me.
