Pain, it likes to come in twosies

15-10-2010
Himself had to get both his lower wisdom teeth out yesterday and having only one wisdom tooth left to get removed I was aware that this is an altogether unpleasant and painful procedure so we decided to be prepared. We got a cold compress and left it in the freezer to put on his face after the removal (apparently this helps stop bruising and reduce swelling), we ordered some very very strong painkillers from the doctor in advance, and he booked three days of work to recover and let the swelling go down in his face. Check us out. Organised or what.

Thankfully the painkillers have been somewhat keeping the pain at bay and while his face is extremely swollen there doesn't seem to be any bruising which would make him look like I like to have a little punching fit if things don't go my way.

The one thing about this is, he cant eat anything solid, to be fair he can hardly open his mouth even, so yesterday he was stuck with custard and jelly and yoghurt. He wasn't even allowed anything hot for 12 hours after he got them out so hat limited his food options even further.

Now I have mentioned before he is prone to migraines, and when I say migraines I am not talking 'headaches that people confuse with migraines' I mean shit sore, body altering migraines. The type that make it impossible for him to open his eyes, leave a dark room, walk in a straight line, keep anything in his stomach etc. One of the things that can trigger a migraine is not eating, skipping meals and the likes so you can imagine what living on a few spoonfuls of custard for a day would do. Not to mention he couldn't have breakfast before heading to the dentist. This was not going to bode well.

We knew this, but the reality was there was nothing much we could do, bar me tying him down and force feeding him custard until he was sick. Still we hoped we had done enough to stave it off. Or that his head would at least figure his body had been through enough for the day so it would hold off on migraine for a few days.

But no. Apparently pain likes to come in twosies. So last night at around 4.30am I was woken to find himself writhing in pain clutching his head. It was a bad 'un. And to top it all off it was a bad 'un that came with a side of nausea - which meant any painkillers that went down, would pretty much be coming back up a few minutes later.

He still has a touch of it this morning, ironically his migraine is giving him more pain than his wisdom teeth (or the spaces where they used to be). Maybe this is natures way if trying to take his mind of the pain in his mouth. Who knows.
