Snow, snow and more snow
02-12-2010It's only been ten months and for most people it feels like yesterday but it's back! That's right folks Dublin is once again in the grips of a cold snap. Only this time the weather means business.
It started off fairly understated with a snowfall on Saturday night. Heave enough to cover the roads and give everything a nice white dusting. Come Sunday morning we were greeted with such a view! It was bright, it was sunny, sure enough it was chilly but the snow was begging to be played with in all its untouched and untrodden on glory. So we layered up and off we went to enjoy. We took a walk in the park and it was beautiful. Everything looked so romantic, almost like it was straight out a fairytale.

The park near our apartment on Sunday
The streets were filled with people making snow men, having snow ball fights, making snow angels and the air rang with laughter and shrieks of delight as everyone spent a lazy Sunday enjoying the spoils of the cold weather.
Fast forward to Thursday. The snow is still here. And while I don't mind it and even went as far to go out and play in it and get some great pictures after work this evening, you can bet that most of the country is now complaining. The streets are no longer filled with fun loving snow fans, the sky has stayed grey all week as it has poured more snow on us. The roads are no longer dusted in white - in fact in the more populated areas it is downright mank - compacted brown sludge is a more fitting way to describe it.
The problem is, many people can't enjoy the snow as Ireland is quite simply not equipped to deal with it. Many people are stuck at home unable to get to work or school as the roads haven't been gritted. Most people own cars with back-wheel drive and have never heard of automatic traction never mind snow chains for the tyres. Uggs are a fashion trend but you might as well be wearing sponges on your feet and yet that's all I have seen most girls trekking round in - for god sake have you never heard of a pair of wellies! Not the most fashionable item I will grant you but they do the job.
So with all this we are not geared up to handle the snow and it ends up becoming more hassle than fun.
Thankfully himself enjoys it as much as I do. Thankfully we live in an area that is still enjoying nice white snow as people avoid chancing the roads in their cars. Thankfully I own a pair of wellies so I don't end up soaked from the bottom up as I trek to work each day. Because of this, I am lucky enough not to be overly hassled by the snow. I can still enjoy it for the fun it provides. I feel for those whose lives have been disrupted by the freak weather, the leaders of the country really should have been more prepared after the last one a few months ago. Maybe if they had of been we would have all been able to go about our daily business and not have to spend our days cursing the snow and wishing it away.
Right I am off to build another snow man - enjoy!
