The badass budget
07-12-2010So 'D' Day is officially here. Budget Day. Some people are calling it 'the day the republic dies'.
It's a sad state of affairs, and I like the rest of the country, am pretty much shitting my pants about what news the 3.45pm address from the Dail will bring.
Higher tax rates, possibly making us one of this most taxed nations.
Higher VAT rates, crushing our hopes of spending our way out of this mess, driving more people northwards to take advantage up there.
Lower minimum wage. Because increasing the cost of living while decreasing people's incomes is the way forward.
Higher third level education charges.
The introduction of water charges - a fantastic idea given that almost every household experienced burst pipes and leakages last year - lets make them pay for that. Top notch idea.
Wider tax brackets to include lower income earners.
Property tax - on top of the already in place stamp duty.
I could go on but it's too depressing. If nothing else at least the weather outside decided to play along. Horrible sleet is pelting down, the clouds are heavy and grey, people are bundled up against the bitterly cold chill, basically the perfect back drop for all this doom and gloom.
Still, as a country we must endure the hardships in the hope that their is a light at the end of the tunnel.
