A bit of a work rant
18-02-2011I have been watching a few videos recently. Music videos to be precise. Music videos that are doing a certain thing that really gets on my goat. Product placement.
I understand (having worked since I left university in the advertising and PR industry) that it is essential to come up with new and innovative ways to reach your audience as traditional advertising becomes less effective but all the recent overkill with the product placement in music videos is a step too far. And the main culprits are Sony!
For example in two recent music videos (by artists presumably under the Sony music label) the advertising of Sony products has been nothing sort of blatant. Whatever happened to being subtle folks? Advertising that is this blatant wont encourage fans of these pop starts to buy your products it will only have them asking the question 'why the hell are they showing that laptop/camera/LCD TV?'. Music videos tend not to have a lot of plot but if your products are standing out like a sore thumb in a plotless 3 minutes of color and dancing video, then you know you are on the wrong track.
In case you are wondering what videos I am out about you can check out Avril Lavigne here and the new Britney video here
