Old friends (2)
31-03-2011This weekend I have a long weekend. Four whole days off work. Been a while since I had a break so I am very excited about the lie ins. But I am even more excited about catching up with some old friends. This is not to say these friends are ancient. Far from it. We just go back a looooong way.
Some of us go back to when we were ankle high running circles round our mummy's after eating far too much chocolate at playschool. Others go back to the 'tween-age' years when we first went to the big bad world of secondary school and life was all a-changing. Others go back to the teenage years and a random school trip to Spain which resulted in a life long friendship. These, my readers, are the people that define me.
They say a person can be judged by their friends, if that is the case then one look at my close circle and you will know you are in the company of the mighty.
Having endured my tears and triumphs together, we have come a long way from the scrawny group of doe eyed lost little souls to the people we are today. Our journey together as seen us all form as individuals and characters in our own right, but, I am not too sure we could have all done it without each other.
There have been boyfriends and girlfriends, relationships and failurs, happiness and heartaches, parties and hangovers, university classes and grown up jobs, jobs we hated, jobs we loved. There have been houses moved and countries visited, laughter and tears, break ups and make ups, a bride, a wedding and one hell of a reception. We have been through all of this together and more.
In recent years, job commitments and travelling desires have seen us scattered to different parts of the country and eventually different parts of the world but the friendships remain. We remain.
This weekend, after almost a year apart we will congregate together again for a good old catch up and a chin wag. We regularly skype, text, email and Facebook but nothing quite beats sitting down with your closest friends and a cup of tea. We may have been apart for almost a year but when the conversation gets going it will be just like old times, sitting in our student house in Belfast that smelt faintly of Indian food and when I (thanks to my lovely friends) had been kindly put up on a sofa. Only this time we have a few more wrinkles. Older yes, wiser, most certainly not.
Only a few more hours to go and I can't wait. It is true what they say, it takes a long time to grow an old friend and yet somehow I have grown a fabulous bunch of them
